School of Education at Syracuse University Portfolio Review Template

Resource Type:
OSP Template

This template works with the Syracuse University School of Education Proficiency matrix to generate a web based presentation of the submitted evidence, reflections on each proficiency and the student's overall emerging theory of teaching at each stage of their program. The audience for this portfolio is a panel of reviewers that assess the student's ability to critically reflect and explain their practice.

Each semester, students are expected to complete a column of the proficiency matrix and describe their progress towards each ofthe program's proficiencies. They also describe the teaching placements that they have experienced during the semester and an overall statement of their "Emerging Theory".

The portfolio experience is meant to be somewhat cumulative. Students first add "learning artifact pages" to the cells of the matrix as "supporting evidence" of their ability or proficiency in a particular area. Each "learning artifact page" describes the context and purpose or each item presented. The reflection form in each cell of the matrix summarizes the student's current understanding and lessons learned related to this proficiency. Finally, students are prompted to submit an "Emerging Theory" that summarizes their overall framework for thinking about teaching.

There are a couple of special pages designed to juxtaposition student reflections on the same proficiency at different stages of the program so that the review panel can compare the student's growth in their ability to explain themselves.
